As one of the oldest mills in the country, The Birkett Mills is a prominent business within the Finger Lakes region. It is located on Penn Yan, a quaint town whose tourism population is steadily increasing. As more visitors come to browse the main street, The Birkett Mills saw an opportunity to connect with tourists (and locals) to inform them of the brand and its products resulting in an increase of engaged interest. As a mill that is not open to the public, the solution was to communicate their brand and what they offer through interpretive signage outside of their mill.
I began this project researching the business and found three foundational characteristics to highlight: their products, rich history, and community involvement. Knowing that the public would be fascinated by The Birkett Mills unique history, I emphasized the historical aspect in my design. Installation is currently in progress.
